Oracy & the Arts
Take a look at a range of opportunities in the arts sector to help promote and inspire oracy in the classroom. There are so many platforms to develop oracy in the arts. These are just a few suggestions for how to inspire oracy through the arts.
Royal Shakespeare Company
The RSC offer many opportunities for oracy. These can come in the form of workshops, teachers’ CPD, or joining the RSC as an Associate school. Take a look at the educational opportunities offered by the RSC. You may wish to become an Associate School or a Lead School.
Artsmark
Become an Artsmark school. This will allow students multiple opportunities to express themselves through different arts subjects. Artsmark is a fantastic platform, accessible to a wide range of students. Schools can look to achieve a range of levels within Artsmark, many of these connect to oracy and the development of students spoken skills.
LAMDA lessons
Offering LAMDA lessons to students in acting or public speaking will build confidence. LAMDA evenings are a great way to showcase students’ oracy skills. LAMDA offers a wide range of opportunities for exams in public speaking, Shakespeare and Acting.
Debating
Form a debating society, or better still, get your 6th formers to lead the main school debating group. There are a range of opportunities for debating competitions such as ‘Debating Matters.’
Articulation Awards
Link the arts and speaking with the Articulation Award which gives 6th formers the opportunity to speak about a piece of art work of their choice.
Public Speaking Competitions
Look out for opportunities for students to take part in public speaking competitions, such as the Jack Peachy ‘Speak Out Challenge.’
